PHILADELPHIA — In a thrilling pre-season friendly at Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday, Liverpool triumphed over Arsenal with a 2-1 victory. Mohamed Salah and Fábio Carvalho scored first-half goals for Liverpool, while Kai Havertz pulled one back for Arsenal just before the break. Despite dominating possession in the second half, Arsenal couldn’t avoid their first defeat on their U.S. tour.
On a sweltering evening, with temperatures around 30 °C (86 °F) at kick-off, Arsenal started brightly in front of a sell-out crowd of 69,879—a record attendance for a football match at this stadium. The Gunners capitalized on some nervousness in Liverpool’s defense as they attempted to play out from the back.
Early Scares and Liverpool’s Breakthrough
Caoimhín Kelleher narrowly avoided an embarrassing error when Gabriel Jesus closed down his third-minute clearance, which rebounded just wide. However, Kelleher’s long ball in the 13th minute set the stage for Liverpool’s first goal. Diogo Jota helped the ball forward to Harvey Elliott, who then slid a pass behind Arsenal’s back-line. Salah outpaced Oleksandr Zinchenko and slotted a low finish past Karl Hein.
Liverpool coach Arne Slot praised Salah, saying, “He always comes back really fit. But if I only use Mo as an example I would not be fair to the other guys because the other ones are strong and fit as well. One of the main positive things until now is that all the boys are fit, we have no injuries at all so we hope he can continue like this and their fitness levels go up and up.”
Liverpool’s Second and Arsenal’s Response
Jarell Quansah made an excellent intervention to deny Jesus a tap-in from Gabriel Martinelli’s cross, and Liverpool continued to threaten. Jota hit the post from another clever Elliott pass before Liverpool doubled their lead 11 minutes before the interval. Elliott lifted the ball over Arsenal’s defense, and Carvalho fired in a low shot from close range.
Arsenal responded five minutes before the break when Odegaard seized on a loose ball in the box. Konstantinos Tsimikas lost his bearings, and the Gunners’ captain found Havertz, who squeezed an effort past Kelleher. Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta emphasized the importance of finishing, saying, “When you’re in those spaces in the box [it is about] putting the ball in the net. We created the situations. We had two or three more big situations as well. We have to improve.”
Second Half and Tactical Changes
Both sides made changes at the break. Jota came off in a pre-planned substitution among Liverpool’s three alterations, while Leandro Trossard and Fabio Vieira replaced Martinelli and Reiss Nelson for Arsenal. Although Arsenal dictated play in the second half, they struggled to create many openings. Vieira had a shot beaten away by Kelleher after Odegaard’s clever through ball, and Eddie Nketiah dragged a tame shot off target.
Looking Ahead
The result marked a second consecutive victory for Arne Slot as Liverpool head coach, following a 1-0 win over Real Betis last weekend. The Reds will face Manchester United in South Carolina on Saturday. Meanwhile, Arsenal, who were set to fly back to London from Philadelphia overnight, will play a friendly against Bayer Leverkusen at Emirates Stadium next Wednesday.
The match showcased both teams’ pre-season progress and highlighted areas for improvement. Liverpool’s clinical finishing and solid defense earned them the win, while Arsenal’s possession and attacking play indicated potential but lacked precision in front of goal. Both teams will look to refine their strategies as they prepare for the upcoming season.
