The stunning victory of Lakshya Sen over Indonesia’s world number 3, Jonatan Christie, has propelled him to the pre-quarterfinals of the men’s singles badminton event at the Paris Olympics. Sen won in straight games 21-18, 21-12 in their final group match on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old from Almora, who clinched a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships, showcased exceptional skill and strategy against Christie, the reigning All England and Asian champion. Sen’s commanding performance is a testament to his growing prowess on the international stage.

Looking ahead, Sen is likely to face his fellow Indian, H.S. Prannoy, in the pre-quarterfinals, provided Prannoy secures a win against Vietnam’s Le Duc Phat later today.

Sen had initially defeated Tokyo Olympics semifinalist Kevin Cordon in his Group L opener. However, this victory was nullified when Cordon withdrew due to a left elbow injury.

Prior to his clash with Christie, Sen, who won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, had defeated Belgium’s Julien Carraggi.

The last time Sen had beaten Christie was four years ago at the Badminton Asia Team Championships. Coming into this match with a 1-4 head-to-head record against Christie, Sen turned the tables with a remarkable display of resilience and skill.

Sen’s strategy involved keeping the shuttle flat and targeting Christie’s weaker forehand. Despite Christie’s attempts to control the pace with his cross-court shots, Sen’s approach proved effective.

In the first game, Christie initially led 5-0 and then 8-2. Sen, however, quickly adjusted, keeping the shuttle flat and capitalizing on Christie’s errors. Sen reduced the deficit to 7-8 and then took a slim lead with a powerful forehand smash.

Sen maintained a fast-paced game, reaching 14-12, but Christie fought back to equalize at 16-16 with a precise cross-court smash. A brief exchange saw the score tied at 18-18. Sen secured the first game with a perfect flat push and a spectacular behind-the-back return.

After the break, Lakshya Sen made a few errors but soon regained control. Despite initial ties at 3-3, Sen’s consistent attacking play and robust defense saw him pull away to a 10-5 lead. Christie’s frequent mistakes allowed Sen to extend his advantage to 18-12.

With Sen holding eight match points, Christie faltered, sending a shot into the net and handing Sen the victory.
